Louisiana Death Index Through LDH Vital Records

All Louisiana death certificates are registered with the Louisiana Department of Health. The LDH Vital Records office in New Orleans holds these records for the entire state, including all deaths recorded in East Baton Rouge Parish. The office is at 1450 Poydras Street, Suite 400, New Orleans. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM. The main phone number is (504) 593-5100.

Recent death records, those less than 50 years old, are confidential under R.S. 40:41. Only qualified individuals may get a certified copy of a death certificate for a recent death. Those who qualify include the surviving spouse, a parent, an adult child, a sibling, a grandparent, an adult grandchild, an insurance beneficiary who can show a letter of interest, an attorney acting for any of those people, or a succession representative or legatee. Deaths older than 50 years are public and anyone can request them.

The LDH website explains how to order a death certificate online, by mail, or in person. The order page is at ldh.la.gov/page/643. The standard fee from LDH is $7.00 per certified copy. You will need a valid photo ID and, for recent records, documents showing you qualify.

The Louisiana Department of Health vital records main page covers all types of certificates and how to reach the office.

East Baton Rouge Death Records at the Louisiana State Archives

East Baton Rouge Parish has a major advantage for researchers. The Louisiana State Archives is located right in Baton Rouge at 3851 Essen Lane. This is the single best resource for historical death index research in the state. The archives hold older vital records, death indexes, and related documents that are not always available online. Hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM and Saturday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. You can call (225) 922-1000 for help before you visit.

Residents of Baton Rouge and East Baton Rouge Parish can walk into the archives without mailing anything or waiting for an online process. Staff can help you search indexes by hand and locate records that predate modern registration systems. This is especially useful for genealogy work on families who lived in the parish before statewide registration became consistent in the 1900s.

The Louisiana State Archives website shows the historical records research page where you can start your search from home.

The archives also maintain a copy fee schedule for document copies. Fees run from $5.00 to $10.00 depending on what you need. Staff can tell you the current rates when you call.

The Louisiana Online Public Vital Records Index lets you search from any computer. It is a free tool that covers many years of deaths and includes East Baton Rouge entries. Finding a name in the index does not give you the full certificate, but it tells you the record exists and helps you order it. The rules for who may get a copy and what a copy must include are set out in R.S. 40:46.

East Baton Rouge Clerk of Court Records

The East Baton Rouge Clerk of Court handles court records for the 19th Judicial District. While the clerk does not issue death certificates directly, succession filings and probate records kept in this office often contain death certificates as attachments. These files are a key secondary source when you want to confirm a death in East Baton Rouge Parish.

Clerk W. Trent Donovan runs the office at 222 St. Louis Street, Room 830 in Baton Rouge. The mailing address is PO Box 1991, Baton Rouge, LA 70821. The phone is (225) 389-3950 and the fax is (225) 389-5197. You can email the office at info@ebrclerkofcourt.org. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. The clerk's website is ebrclerkofcourt.org, which may have occasional connectivity issues but includes online case search, e-filing, and land records tools.

Court records here are public under R.S. 44:1. Anyone can ask to see court files. Succession cases, in particular, are worth checking. They often confirm the date of death, the names of heirs, and other facts that tie directly to what you find in the death index.
