Livingston Parish Death Index Online Services

The Livingston Parish Clerk offers public records search, eFiling, and fraud alert notifications through its online services. The online records search lets you look up civil, land, and related case filings. For death certificate data, the most useful online tool is the Louisiana State Archives' free vital records index, which covers historical deaths statewide.

The clerk also participates in eClerks LA, the statewide land records monitoring service. As the office describes it: "We now have Fraud Alert Notifications for our land records! This service will allow a person to register up to 5 names per email address to alert them if something is recorded with the clerk's office in that name." This is relevant to death record research because property transfers and succession filings are common after a death and are tracked through land records.

For historical death record searches, the Louisiana State Archives at the Louisiana Vital Records Index is free and searchable online. Type in a name, select Louisiana or a specific parish, and browse results. This index covers deaths well beyond the 50-year restriction window and is open to all. It does not cost anything to search.

Under R.S. 40:40, the state Registrar of Vital Records manages the statewide system. Parish clerks work within that system. Records from Livingston Parish are part of the same statewide database. A record found in the state index may be requested as a certified copy from either the clerk's office or LDH, depending on its age and origin.

Who Can Access Livingston Parish Death Records

Death records less than 50 years old are restricted in Louisiana. You must qualify under R.S. 40:41 to request them. Show your photo ID and documents proving your relationship to the deceased.

Eligible parties include the surviving spouse, a parent, an adult child, a sibling, a grandparent, an adult grandchild, an insurance beneficiary with a letter from their insurance company, a licensed attorney representing any of those people, or a succession representative or legatee. If you fall in one of these categories, you can request a certified copy from the clerk's office in Livingston or Denham Springs.

Records more than 50 years old are open to the public. No proof of relationship is needed. Anyone may request a copy. The fee still applies, but eligibility is not an issue for older records. The Louisiana State Archives and the LDH both hold records in that range. Start with the free online index at sos.la.gov/historicalresources to find what you need before ordering.

Louisiana Department of Health Death Certificates

The Louisiana Department of Health at ldh.la.gov/vitalrecords is the main state source for certified death certificates. LDH holds statewide death registrations including those from Livingston Parish. You can visit the New Orleans office, order by mail, or use VitalChek online.

The LDH order page at ldh.la.gov/page/643 explains the ordering process for death certificates. The image below shows this page, which covers what documents to include and how to submit a mail-in request. Louisiana Department of Health order page for death index certified copies

The LDH office is at 1450 Poydras St Suite 400, New Orleans, open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM. The phone is (504) 593-5100. The LDH fee is $7.00 per certified copy, which is lower than the clerk's fee of $26.00. Under R.S. 40:46, these fees are set by state law.

You can also order through VitalChek at (877) 605-8562. VitalChek is an authorized third-party service that processes orders and mails certified copies to you. A service fee applies on top of the state fee. This is a convenient option if you cannot travel to New Orleans or to the Livingston Parish courthouse.

The Louisiana Public Records Law (R.S. 44:1) covers the broad right to access government records. Death records are exempt from general public access for the first 50 years, but related records such as probate filings, civil court documents, and land records are open under the general public records framework. These can be searched online or at the clerk's office.
