Jefferson Parish residents and family members of the deceased can visit any of the three locations to request a certified copy of a death certificate.
The three locations that offer death certificate service are First Parish Court at 924 David Drive in Metairie, Second Parish Court at 100 Huey P. Long Avenue in Gretna, and Juvenile Court at 1546 Gretna Boulevard in Harvey. The main clerk office is at 200 Derbigny Street, Suite 5600, in Gretna. All locations are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. For death certificates specifically, you should plan to arrive before 4:00 PM.
Per the clerk's office: "The Jefferson Parish Clerk of Court is pleased to partner with the Louisiana Bureau of Vital Records to offer birth and death certificate service at three of its locations: First Parish Court, 924 David Dr., Metairie LA 70003; Second Parish Court, 100 Huey P. Louisiana Closed Record Rules for Jefferson Parish Death Index
Louisiana is what the clerk office calls a "closed record" state. Death certificates are not public records. They are confidential for 50 years from the year of death. This applies to every death in Jefferson Parish and across all 64 Louisiana parishes. The rule comes from R.S. 40:41, which sets the 50-year confidentiality period.
Per the clerk's office statement: "Louisiana is a 'closed record' state, meaning that birth and death certificates are not public records. All requests for birth or death certificates must include proper identification. Under Louisiana law, birth records are strictly confidential until 100 years after the year of birth. Death records are strictly confidential until 50 years after the year of death."
After 50 years, death records move into the public domain. They become part of the historical death index held by the Louisiana State Archives. Anyone can then access them without having to prove a family relationship. This system protects privacy while still allowing historical research and genealogy work over time.
The Louisiana Public Records Law at R.S. 44:1 establishes broad access rights to government records. Death certificates under 50 years are carved out of this general access. The state registrar authority under R.S. 40:40 governs how LDH manages the vital records system statewide.
Who Can Get a Jefferson Parish Death Certificate
The clerk's office publishes a clear statement about who qualifies. Per the Jefferson Parish Clerk of Court: "You may obtain a certified copy of a death certificate if you are the surviving spouse of the person named on the document, parent of the person named on the document, adult child of the person named on the document, sibling of the person named on the document, grandparent of the person named on the document, or an adult grandchild of the person named on the document, or the beneficiary of an insurance policy of the person named on the document."
In addition to those listed, attorneys representing any qualifying relative may also submit a request. A succession representative or a legatee named in a will can access records needed for estate administration. Everyone must present valid identification. The clerk will verify your eligibility before issuing a copy.
If you do not fall into any of these categories, you cannot get a certified copy of a death certificate issued within the last 50 years. You can, however, search the online vital records index for deaths older than 50 years through the Louisiana State Archives. That index is free to search and available to anyone.
Jefferson Parish Death Certificate Fees and Payment
The Jefferson Parish Clerk of Court charges $26.00 for each certified copy of a death certificate. The clerk accepts cash, check, or money order only. No credit cards. Per the office: "The Jefferson Parish Clerk of Court accepts only cash, check, or money order for birth and death certificates."
If you order through the Louisiana Department of Health directly, the state fee is $7.00 per copy. LDH handles mail and in-person orders at 1450 Poydras Street, Suite 400, New Orleans. Phone orders go through VitalChek at (877) 605-8562. Online orders are also processed through VitalChek at vitalchek.com. VitalChek adds a service charge on top of the state fee. The LDH order page is at ldh.la.gov/page/643.
For records older than 50 years from the Louisiana State Archives, fees are $5.00 for a plain copy and $10.00 for a certified copy. These are payable to the Secretary of State. The right to receive certified copies and the fee structure are also addressed in R.S. 40:46.
Jefferson Parish Court Public Records
In addition to vital records, Jefferson Parish has a court public records portal that covers civil and criminal case information. This is a separate system from death certificates. Court records can show case filings, judgments, and other documents that are part of the court record. For death-related matters like successions and estate cases, the court portal may have relevant filings.
The Jefferson Parish court public records portal is a separate resource from the vital records service at the clerk office. You can find that portal at jeffersonparishcourt.org/public-records. The image below shows that portal page.
